FORT LEE, Va.  –   FORT LEE, Va. (May 3, 2021) -- A Kenner Army Health Clinic team managed a third place in the first ever Regional Health Command-Atlantic Best Leaders Competition taking place April 13-30 at Fort Stewart, Ga.
Capt. Javier Colon, Master Sgt. Christopher Leydic, Sgt. Tajah Cannon and Spc. Bricen Bolsen were among 17 teams entered in the Soldier skills showcase testing physical condition, endurance, resiliency and technical skills through Warrior Tasks and Battle Drills and other events.  

“The competition was rough,” said Colon. “The weather was 80 plus degrees each day and we carried 70-pound rucks throughout the entire time. All the events were conducted consecutively with little time to rest.”
 
Colon, the Medical Department Activity company commander, said competitors were challenged with a combat swim test and Army Combat Fitness Test in operational camouflage pattern uniform and boots. Later, they took up marksmanship tasks at the range, ruck marches and much more in a tactical environment.

“The training that was conducted for these events allowed us to hone in on the basic skills that every Soldier should know,” he said.
 
Colon also said training in preparation for BLC was well worth the investment in time and sweat.
 
“Participating in these type of competitions allows us to set ourselves apart from our peers,” he said. “The best of the best participate in these competitions and while there can only be one winner, all Soldiers who compete are provided the opportunity to show off their skills to the RHC-A senior leadership.”
 
Although the team fell short of winning the title, the upside was working as a team toward a common goal and becoming more connected with team members, said Colon.
 
“The best part of the competition was the time I spent with my Soldiers,” he said. “You really get to know people when their put in uncomfortable situations. I was able to see how my Soldiers performed in a stressful environment and they were able to see the same from me.  I am proud of their performance and I couldn't have had a better team.”
 
A team from Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon won the competition. They will represent Regional Health Command-Atlantic in the Army Medical Command’s BLC in July.
